Karman Fellow 2024

Olayinka Fagbemiro

Chief Scientific Officer
Nigerian Space Agency

Olayinka has dedicated over 17 years to advancing space science and technology as the Chief Scientific Officer at the Nigerian Space Agency. She currently leads the Space Education Outreach Unit and is a vital member of the Planning, Policy, and Research team.

Her leadership extends to her role as the Founder and National Coordinator, Astronomers Without Borders Nigeria, an NGO leveraging astronomy
to foster STEM education and address educational inequalities across Nigeria. Olayinka is pursuing a PhD in Geoinformatics at the African University of Science and Technology, where her research focuses on the use of deep learning algorithms for urban development studies. Her expertise in spatial sciences is further augmented by her academic background, with a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Ilorin and an M.Sc. in Technology Management from Obafemi Awolowo University.

A fervent advocate for STEM education, Olayinka has initiated several programs aimed at inspiring the next generation of African scientists and engineers. Her efforts have significantly increased access to STEM education in underserved communities, empowering youths through scholarships, mentorships, and hands-on workshops. She champions educational initiatives that promote STEM among underrepresented groups, particularly young girls and children in Internally Displaced People’s camps, significantly contributing to reducing gender disparities in STEM fields within the region.

In addition to her academic and educational pursuits, Olayinka actively participates in international space policy discussions, advocating for inclusivity in global space endeavors. Her leadership and commitment have garnered her numerous accolades, including the International Aeronautical Federation Young Professional Award and being named one of Nigeria’s top 100 Women in Tech. She is also a 2020-21 TechWomen Fellow, an initiative by the U.S. Department of State. Olayinka joins the 2024 Karman Fellowship as an esteemed fellow, eager to further global dialogue and actions toward cooperative and sustainable space exploration.
